Rock throwers damage 18 cars in Hume Freeway crime spree

More than a dozen drivers have been pelted with rocks and chunks of concrete thrown from freeway bridges north of Melbourne.

The rock throwers have been targeting drivers on the Hume Freeway in central Victoria since January 9, when a dozen cars were significantly damaged while driving under bridges in Broadford and Wallan.

The vandals struck again this weekend.

Six cars were hit with rocks thrown from an overpass in Wandong in the early hours of Saturday, a police spokeswoman said.

“Police are investigating and are keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone that may have seen suspicious activity in the area,” she said.

The attacks occurred between 12.10am and 12.40am with rocks thrown from the Arkells Road overpass.

While no one was injured in the incidents, previous rock-throwing attacks in Melbourne have caused serious injury and police warn it could easily kill someone.

Man charged with alleged historical sexual assaults on children near Wagga Wagga

Police have charged a man with alleged historical sexual assaults of two girls in Ganmain, near Wagga Wagga.

Officers from Wagga Wagga Local Area Command have been investigating alleged historical sexual assaults of two girls who were aged five at the time.

The offences are alleged to have occurred at different times, between 1982 – 1983 and 1987 – 1988.

Following a complex investigation, at 9.50am today (Monday 18 January 2016), police attended a home in Ganmain and arrested a 52-year-old man.

He was taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station and charged with;

– Sexual intercourse with a child under 10 (x2)

– Sexual assault category 4 – indecent assault

– Carnal knowledge of a child under 10

– Sexual assault category 3 (x5); and,

– Sexual intercourse without consent.

The man was refused bail to appear at Wagga Wagga Local Court tomorrow (Tuesday 19 January 2016).

Hume Highway closed after truck catches fire near Breadalbane

The Hume Highway has reopened, after a large truck fire forced traffic to be diverted towards Canberra on Tuesday morning.

The highway was partially closed south of Breadalbane, between Gunning and Goulburn, about 3am on Tuesday morning after the B-double truck caught fire.

All southbound vehicles were being detoured towards Canberra however both lanes had reopened by 9.30am.

The road was closed intermittently while the vehicle was removed.

Motorists were advised to exercise caution.

The truck fire also sparked a grass fire on the side of the road, which was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

Police investigate after business destroyed by fire – Goulburn

Police are investigating after a cafe and bicycle shop was destroyed by fire last night in Goulburn.

Emergency services responded to reports of a commercial business fire on Clifford Street just after 8pm (Monday 11 January 2016).

On arrival officers from the Hume Local Area Command found the business to be well alight.

The fire was extinguished by Fire & Rescue NSW.

A crime scene has been established and will be examined by specialist forensic officers.

Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about the fire that may assist with their inquiries to contact Crime Stoppers.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Woman charged over alleged attempted murder near Wagga Wagga

A woman will appear in court today over the alleged attempted murder of a man in Coolamon, north west of Wagga Wagga, last night.

Just after 8.10pm (Monday 11 January 2016), officers attached to Wagga Wagga Local Area Command were patrolling along Mann Street, when they stopped and spoke to a woman.

Inquiries led police to arrest the 35-year-old woman, after she told officers she had allegedly attempted to harm her husband.

Emergency services attended a home on Wade Street and treated a 44-year-old man at the scene for a cut to his throat. He did not require further treatment.

The woman was taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station, where she was charged with attempted murder.

She has been refused bail, to appear at Wagga Wagga Local Court today (Tuesday 12 January 2016).

Man charged over alleged suspicious fire – Albury

A man will appear in court tomorrow after allegedly setting fire to a unit in Albury this morning.

About 5.15am (Sunday 10 January 2016), emergency services were called to a unit on Thurgoona Street following reports of a fire.

Fire & Rescue NSW officers attended to the fire, which was extinguished a short time later. Extensive damage was caused to the premises; however no one was injured.

Following initial inquiries by officers attached to Albury Local Area Command, a 54-year-old man was spoken to by police.

He has been charged with two counts of malicious damage by fire, and a number of unrelated offences.

The man has been refused bail, to appear at Albury Local Court tomorrow (Monday 11 January 2016).

Pilot walks unharmed after light plane crashes ‘into ball of flames’ near Goulburn

A Robertson pilot is incredibly lucky to have walked away from a fiery plane crash this afternoon.
The single engine Brumby had begun taking off when it crashed and caught fire.
Police said the pilot and sole occupant, a 78-year-old man, was able to leave the plane himself and did not require medical treatment.
The plane was destroyed.
A NSW ambulance spokesman said the man did not require an ambulance or help from paramedics.
A police spokeswoman said the plane crashed on an airstrip near the edge of the Hume Highway on Munroe Rd.
Witness, Ian, was driving along the Hume Highway towards Sydney when he saw the plane erupt into a ‘ball of flames’.
He saw people rush towards the plane and try to pull out those inside.
“I saw a burst of flames and looked beside me and the plane was in a ball of flames,” he told said.
“The last thing you want to see is a plane crash into a ball of fire on the side of the road.
“It’s the last thing you expect to see.”

Pilot unhurt after plane crash – Southern Tablelands

A pilot has had a lucky escape after his plane crashed and caught fire in the Southern Tablelands tonight (Friday 8 January 2016).

About 6pm, emergency services were called to a private air strip near the Hume highway between Goulburn and Marulan.

A single engine Brumby had begun taking off when it crashed and caught fire.

The pilot and sole occupant, a 78-year-old man from Robertson, was able to leave the plane himself and did not require medical treatment.

The plane was destroyed

Inquiries into the events leading up to the crash are continuing. These inquiries are being carried out by Recreational Aviation Australia.

Two charged over stabbing – Goulburn

Police have charged two men over a stabbing at Goulburn on the weekend.
About 8.50pm on Saturday (2 January 2016), police were called to outside a home on Mary Street, Goulburn, after reports of a stabbing.

Police from The Hume Local Area Command attended and found a 19-year-old man with a puncture wound to his abdomen.

He was taken to Goulburn Hospital for treatment to non-life threatening injuries.

About 4.30pm on Sunday (3 January 2016), police arrested a 23-year-old man at Goulburn Police Station where he was charged with reckless wounding and affray.

He was refused bail to appear at Goulburn Local Court yesterday (4 January 2016), where he was remanded to reappear at the same court on 3 February 2016.

About 10.45am yesterday (Monday 4 January 2016), a 25-year-old man was arrested at Goulburn Police Station.

He was charged with two counts of common assault and one count of affray.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Goulburn Local Court on 27 January 2016.

Police are investigating the stabbing of a man in Goulburn.

About 8.50pm yesterday (Saturday 2 January 2015), police were called to outside a home on Mary Street, Goulburn, after reports of a stabbing.

Police from The Hume Local Area Command attended and found a 19-year-old man with a puncture wound to his abdomen.

He was taken to Goulburn Hospital for treatment, where he is understood to be in a stable condition.

A crime scene was established and police are speaking to witnesses.
