Lake Macquarie Rotary Police Officer of the Year Awards

The Lake Macquarie Local Area Command and the Belmont Rotary Club have teamed up to formally recognise the outstanding work of three local police employees.

Tonight (Monday 21 September 2015), the inaugural Lake Macquarie Rotary Police Officer of the Year Awards will be held at the Belmont 16 Foot Sailing Club.

Three local police employees will be recognised for their service and dedication in front of an audience that will include their families, colleagues and Rotary Club members.

The three police employees to be awarded are:

– Leading Senior Constable Jason Baker, who was voted ‘Lake Macquarie Police Officer of the Year’;

– Ms Sue Heaton, who was voted ‘Civilian Employee of the Year’; and,

– Senior Constable Kerrie Rogers, who was voted ‘Customer Service Officer of the Year’.

All three officers will now be entered into the state-wide Police Officer of the Year Awards, which will be held in Sydney on Friday 6 November 2015.

The Commander of the Lake Macquarie Local Area Command, Supt Brett Greentree, commended the winners for their great work and thanked the Rotary Club for their support.

“Jason, Sue and Kerrie deserved to be recognised for the excellent work they deliver, day in, day out,” Supt Greentree said.

“I would also like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to the Belmont Rotary Club for their ongoing support of local police officers.”

Police investigate sexual and indecent assaults – Tamworth

Detectives are investigating after the sexual assault of one woman, and the indecent assault of another, at Tamworth overnight.

In the first incident, just after 11pm (Saturday 19 September 2015), an 18-year-old woman was walking along Kable Avenue, when she was indecently assaulted by an unknown man on a pushbike.

The man asked the woman to go into the park with him and when she refused he rode off.

During the second incident, about 2am (Sunday 20 September 2015), a 22-year-old woman was walking through Bicentennial Park when she was grabbed from behind, forced to the ground and sexually assaulted.

The man rode from the scene. Officers from Oxley Local Area Command were told of both incidents and have commenced investigations.

They believe the two incidents may be linked.

Police have released an image of a man who may be able to assist with inquiries.

The man depicted is described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged about 20-25, wearing dark pants, a brown jacket, dark beanie, and riding a pushbike.

Anyone with information that may assist investigators is urged to come forward.

Police threatened with a tomahawk – Sandgate

A man has been charged after threatening police with a tomahawk in Sandgate last night (Saturday 19 September 2015).

About 9pm, a 32-year-old man was at a house on Maitland Road, allegedly threatening self harm.

Police were called after the man was seen standing on the roadway allegedly attempting to jump in front of moving cars.

Police attended and commenced a search for the man.

A short time later, police located the man returning to the house armed with a tomahawk. He threatened police with the axe.

Police spoke with the man and he dropped the axe. A scuffle ensured with police and the man was arrested.

As a result of the scuffle, police suffered minor injuries.

The 32-year-old was taken to Newcastle City Police Station. He was charged with two counts of assault police by threatening them with a tomahawk, possess prohibited weapon, use weapon to avoid apprehension and intimidation.

He was refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Sunday 20 September 2015.

Police appeal after child approach – Blackalls Park

Police are appealing for assistance after children were approached in the front yard of their home in Blackalls Park yesterday.

About 6.25pm (Thursday 17 September 2015), a five-year-old boy and an eight-year-old girl were playing in the front yard of their home on Rupert Street, Blackalls Park, when a man in a white four wheel drive drove up onto the footpath right out front of the house.

The man got out of the car and approached the front fence of the property before speaking to the children in what the children allege was a suspicious and intimidating manner.

The children ran inside and informed their father. The man got back in his vehicle and drove from the scene.

Police from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command were notified about the incident and are conducting inquiries.

Police are urging the man in the white four wheel drive to come forward and speak to them.

The man has been described as Caucasian appearance, aged in his 40s, with short dark hair and a facial beard. He was wearing a black shirt with grey shorts or pants.

Any witnesses who may have information are also urged to come forward.

Police and Corrective Services conduct enforcement operation targeting registered child-sex offenders

NSW Police and Corrective Services NSW have joined forces for a two-day operation to enforce laws with respect to registered child-sex offenders.

The operation was conducted in the by Strike Force Ranok, which comprises 35 specialist and general-duties police, as well as Corrective Services NSW personnel.

A range of specialist officers assisted Newcastle City Local Area Command; including detectives from State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad, as well as the Child Abuse Squad.

A particular focus of the operation was to review computer and other electronic equipment belonging to people convicted of possessing child-abuse materials.

These checks were conducted by specialist technology-enhanced crime officers.

During the operation – which ran from Tuesday 15 September to Wednesday 16 September 2015 – Strike Force Ranok personnel detected 18 breaches of the Child Protection (Offender Reporting) Act 2004. A total of 14 people were charged in relation to these breaches.

Of note, officers arrested a 26-year-old man following the execution of a search warrant. He was charged with:

– Possess child pornography;
– Use carriage service to access child abuse material;
– Fail to comply with reporting obligations;
– Contravene prohibition order;
– Use carriage service transmit/publish/promote child abuse; and
– Produce, disseminate or possess child abuse material.

He was refused bail and appeared in court today (Thursday 17 September 2015).

Acting Newcastle City Local Area Commander, Acting Superintendent Steve Laksa, said the welfare of children is of paramount importance to the NSW Police Force.

“We timed this operation intentionally to coincide with the lead-up to school holidays,” Acting Supt Laksa said.

“This operation under Strike Force Ranok follows another operation of the same nature in the Newcastle area last year, which at the time was the first of its kind.

“This week’s activities ran smoothly and we achieved our aim. The joint-agency approach – collaborating with State Crime Command and Corrective Services – worked extremely well, and I anticipate we will run more operations of this kind,” Acting Supt Laksa said.

Sex Crimes Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Linda Howlett, said operations of this kind help monitor compliance by registered offenders with their legal obligations under the Act.

“The Sex Crimes Squad constantly works with local police and partner agencies to monitor registered child-sex offenders,” Det Supt Howlett said.

“This operation follows on from last year’s efforts and has allowed police to send a loud, clear and unified message that we will not tolerate breaches of legislation designed to protect children,” Det Supt Howlett said.

Corrective Services NSW Director for Community Corrections in the Hunter, Rod Chenhall, said the joint operation allows both agencies to leverage of each other’s powers to ensure sex offenders are adapting to lawful community life.

“This type of operation adds another layer of monitoring as part of our continued efforts to enhance management of child-sex offenders in the community,” Mr Chenhall said.

“Corrective Services NSW hopes to continue working with NSW Police to ensure these offenders comply with the conditions imposed on them,” he said.

Missing man located alive in bushland – Central Hunter

A man who had been reported missing from East Maitland has been taken to hospital after being located in bushland at Monkerai.
The man, aged 64, was last spoken to by family on Saturday 8 August 2015. On Saturday 5 September 2015, family attended his unit on Porter Avenue, East Maitland, and could not locate him. They subsequently notified police that he was missing.

Over the last 10 days, officers conducted a number of patrols and searches for the man.

As a result of information provided by local media and members of the community, police conducted a patrol of bushland in a remote area of the Barrington Tops earlier today (Wednesday 16 September 2015).

Shortly before 3pm, they located the man sitting in his vehicle, which was parked on a bush track about two kilometres from Monkerai Road.

The man was taken to Dungog Hospital for the treatment of symptoms related to exposure, dehydration and malnutrition.

Police and the man’s family would like to thank the community for their assistance.

Girl approached – Cessnock

Police are making inquiries after a young girl and boy were approached by a man in the Hunter.

Shortly after 3pm yesterday (Tuesday 15 September 2015), a nine-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy were walking home after getting off their school bus at Mount View Road, Cessnock.

On O’Shea Circuit, a man sitting in a car motioned to the young girl and asked her to come over to him. The girl said “No” to the man and ran towards her brother who was walking a short distance ahead.

The man in the car subsequently drove off.

Upon arriving home, the children told their parents what had happened, and police were notified.

Inquiries into the matter are now underway and police would like to hear from anyone who may be able to assist.

The man in the car is described as being aged between 40 and 60 years old. He was wearing a red t-shirt, a green hat and sunglasses. The car he was sitting in is only described as a light-blue sedan.

Missing man – East Maitland

Police are appealing for the public’s assistance to help find a man who is missing from East Maitland.

Mark Ross Thompson, 64, was last spoken to by family on Saturday 8 August 2015.

On Saturday 5 September 2015, family attended his unit on Porter Avenue, East Maitland, and could not locate him.

They contact police and officers from Central Hunter Local Area Command commenced investigations. Searches for Mark Thompson have been unsuccessful and are now appealing for the community’s assistance.

There are serious concerns for his welfare as he has a medical condition, which requires medication.

He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 185cm tall, of large build, blue eyes, fair hair and with a beard/ moustache.

Mr Thompson’s car, a maroon Ford Fairlane with NSW registration BX43NV, is also missing.

Investigators are appealing for anyone with information about the whereabouts of Mark Thompson to call Crime Stoppers.

Police investigate man’s movements prior to death – Hunter River

Police are appealing for public assistance as they investigate a man’s movements one week prior to his body being found in the Hunter River last month.

Just after 5.30pm on Friday 28 August 2015, Craig Elkin, 43, was located deceased in the Hunter River at Morpeth by a member of the public.

Officers from Central Hunter Local Area Command were called and established a crime scene.

Investigations into Mr Elkin’s death have indicated that his death was not suspicious.

However; detectives continue their inquiries into Mr Elkin’s movements between Sunday 23 August and Friday 28 August 2015, the time between when he was last seen and when his body was located.

Mr Elkin was last seen about 2am on Sunday 23 August, leaving an address on Glenarvon Road, Lorn. He was wearing dark-blue tracksuit pants, a green t-shirt, a navy jumper and black/red ‘Asics’ running shoes.

Police are appealing for anyone with information that may assist with their investigation to contact Crime Stoppers.

A report is being prepared for the Coroner.

Man arrested over discharging firearm and other offences -Lake Macquarie

A man will appear in court today facing a number of firearm related charges after he allegedly discharged a rifle during a dispute at Blacksmiths, near Lake Macquarie overnight.

Police will allege a 24-year-old man allegedly armed with a loaded rifle, drove to a premises on Boikon Street where he confronted a 21-year-old man.

The two men became involved in a scuffle and a round was fired from the weapon. The 21-year-old man managed to overpower the older man, and secured the firearm.

The older man ran from the premises and allegedly drove to Caves’ Beach where he was arrested in his vehicle by police.

He was subjected to a roadside breath test which provided a positive reading. He was arrested and taken to Charlestown Police Station where he is expected to be charged with a number of firearm related offences as well as drink driving and an outstanding warrant.

He will be appearing in Newcastle Local Court later today. (Tuesday 15 September 2015).

No one was hurt during this incident.

The man was taken to Charlestown Police Station where he was charged with 11 offences:

– possess loaded firearm in public place;

– possess unauthorised firearm;

– possess unregistered firearm;

– possess ammunition without holding licence/permit;

– carry firearm manner likely injure person/property;

– enter building/land with firearm;

– handle/use firearm under the influence of alcohol;

– armed with intent to commit indictable offence;

– drive motor vehicle while licence suspended;

– drive with mid-range PCA; and

– an outstanding warrant.

He was refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court today. (Tuesday 15 September 2015).

No one was hurt during this incident.
