Police appeal for witnesses after pedestrian dies – Belmont

Police are appealing for information after a pedestrian was hit by a car at Belmont yesterday, and has since died in hospital this morning.

Just before 7.40pm (Friday 13 November 2015), a 78-year-old man parked his car on Evans Street, and began walking with his 74-year-old wife across Ross Street, towards a sailing club.

At the same time, an 81-year-old woman was driving a Toyota Camry south along Evans Street, with her 80-year-old husband a passenger, when the vehicle and the 78-year-old man collided.

Emergency services were called, and the man was treated at the scene, before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

This morning (Saturday 14 November 2015), the man died in hospital.

No one else was injured during the incident.

Officers attached to Lake Macquarie Local Area Command attended and commenced investigations.

As inquiries into the circumstances leading up to the incident continue, police are urging any witnesses to come forward and contact Lake Macquarie Police via Crime Stoppers.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Car hits woman and baby before crashing into cafe – Newcastle

A car has knocked over a woman and a baby before crashing into a cafe in the Newcastle CBD.

Around 12.20pm today (Friday 13 November 2015), emergency services were called to the intersection of Perkins and Hunter Streets.

Officers have been told that a car reversed into a parked vehicle, before mounting a footpath, knocking over a woman and a baby, and crashing into a cafe.

Both the woman, believed to be aged in her late 20s, and the baby have been taken to hospital. The woman is suspected to have sustained a number of broken bones while the baby will be examined for possible head injuries.

The driver of the car, a man believed to be aged in his 70s, has been taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

An investigation into the crash is now underway.

Man located with serious injuries – Hamilton South

Police are appealing for public assistance after a male was located seriously injured in Newcastle yesterday.

About 3pm (Wednesday 11 November 2015), police located a 51-year-old man lying on Parkway Avenue, near the intersection with Smith Street, in Hamilton South.

The male was found to have numerous serious injuries, including to his head and neck.

The man was taken to John Hunter Hospital where he remains in a stable condition in intensive care.

Police from Newcastle Local Area Command are trying to determine what caused the man’s injuries.

Investigators are yet to locate anyone who witnessed the incident, and are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.

Two men charged with murder – Wickham

Two men have been charged over the alleged murder of Robert Parry in the Hunter Region in March this year.

Just after 3am on Saturday 7 March 2015, police and emergency services were called to a home on Dickson Street, Wickham, following reports of a man being injured.

On arrival, officers located the 41-year-old man suffering a gunshot wound. He was unable to be revived at the scene.

A crime scene was established and examined by specialist forensic officers.

Detectives from Newcastle City Local Area Command, assisted by State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, established Strike Force Telagaree to investigate the murder.

On Thursday 24 September, Strike Force detectives executed a search warrant at a home on Woods Street, Redhead, and allegedly located and seized .22 sawn-off rifle, a .410 sawn-off shotgun, a replica pistol, and ammunition.

A 21-year-old man was arrested at the home and charged with two counts of possess shortened firearm, not keep firearm safely, supply prohibited firearm and supply ammunition.

He is currently before the court and is next due to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday 18 November 2015.

Following extensive investigations, Strike Force detectives arrested a 22-year-old man at a correctional facility at Silverwater yesterday (Wednesday 11 November 2015).

He was subsequently charged with murder, specially aggravated enter dwelling with intent to commit serious indictable offence, robbery in company cause wound, demand property in company with menaces with intent to steal, larceny, possess loaded firearm in public place, fire firearm in public place, enter dwelling with firearm, possess unauthorised firearm and use unauthorised firearm.

Earlier today (Thursday 12 November 2015), Strike Force detectives arrested another 22-year-old man at a correctional facility at Cessnock.

He was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with murder, specially aggravated enter dwelling with intent to commit serious indictable offence, robbery in company cause wound, demand property in company with menaces with intent to steal, larceny, possess loaded firearm in public place, fire firearm in public place, enter dwelling with firearm, possess unauthorised firearm and use unauthorised firearm.

Both men have been refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today.

Three deceased in helicopter crash – Central Hunter LAC

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner after the bodies of three people were located in the wreck of a helicopter yesterday.

About 3pm on Saturday (7 November 2015), the Eurocopter took off from a location at Breeza, near Tamworth, heading to Sydney.

The aircraft was scheduled to arrive at the property in Terry Hills at 5.30pm the same day but failed to arrive at the destination.

The helicopter was being piloted by a 74-year-old Terry Hills man. Also in the aircraft were his 71-year-old wife and a 72-year-old Bayview man.

Yesterday morning (Monday 9 November 2015), the occupants were reported missing to police at Mona Vale.

An aerial search was commenced by Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) shortly after.

About 7pm yesterday (Monday 9 November 2015), the wreckage and three bodies were located in the Wattagan Forest, within Central Hunter Local Area Command.

Police from Central Hunter LAC, Newcastle Police Rescue Unit, Forensic Services Group and an Inspector from the Police Airwing remain on the scene, assisting with the recovery.

Once the recovery is completed, the scene will be handed over to investigators from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), who will undertake an investigation into the crash.

Police will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.

91-year-old woman injured during aggravated break and enter – Maitland

A woman will appear in court today after she was arrested and charged with breaking into the home of an elderly woman and assaulting her at East Maitland yesterday.

About 8.15am on Saturday 7 November 2015 a 91-year-old woman was awoken in the bedroom of her Barton Street home by an intruder.

The woman noticed cupboard doors and drawers had been opened and the woman standing in her bedroom had taken her handbag.

Getting out of bed the woman challenged the intruder and grabbed her handbag in an attempt to regain it and a struggle ensued.

The intruder allegedly kicked the woman in the lower right leg and she screamed in pain.

The intruder then threw the handbag at the woman and ran from the home.

Police were contacted by the woman and officers from Central Hunter Local Area Command arrested a 45-year-old woman in a nearby yard.

Police will allege that she was in possession of property taken from the home at the time of her arrest. Several other items located nearby were seized and taken for forensic examination.

The woman was taken to Maitland Police Station and later charged with aggravated break and enter inflict actual bodily harm, possess housebreaking implements and malicious damage.

The local woman was refused bail and will appear at Maitland Bail Court later today.

The woman suffered bruising to her leg following the assault but did not require medical treatment.

Police charge two with ‘ICE’ supply – Strike Force Weonga

Two men will appear before court later today after being charged by police with supplying a large commercial quantity of methyl amphetamine (ICE) overnight.

During June of this year officers attached to the Central Hunter Local Area Command formed Strike Force Weonga to investigate the supply of prohibited drugs in the Hunter.

Shortly before 12.30am today (Saturday 7 November 2015), officers attached to SF Weonga stopped a Mitsubishi Lancer in Church Street at Ryde.

The 31-year-old male driver and his 29-year-old male passenger were both arrested and the vehicle was searched.

Police will allege that during the search they located more than 500 grams of Methyl Amphetmine (ICE).

Both men were conveyed to Ryde Police Station where they were later charged with supply large commercial quantity of methyl amphetamine. The older man was also charged with possess prohibited drug.

Both were refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Bail Court today.

Inquiries by SF Weonga continue and investigators have urged anyone with information about illicit drugs to contact Crime Stoppers.

Police seek information to locate wanted man – Newcastle City LAC

Police from Newcastle City Local Area Command are appealing for information to locate a man wanted by virtue of outstanding warrant.

Rhys McKinley, aged 28, is currently wanted on an outstanding warrant related to a stealing offence.

He is described as being Caucasian in appearance, about 170-180cm tall, with a medium build, brown hair and blue eyes.

Mr McKinley is known to frequent the Stockton and surrounding areas.

Anyone who has information about Mr McKinley is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Newcastle police.

Man charged with possession of unauthorised firearm – Jesmond

Police from Newcastle City Local Area Command have charged a man with possession of an unauthorised firearm.

A taxi picked up the man in Mayfield about 6.30pm yesterday (Wednesday 4 November 2015).

During a conversation with the male taxi driver, the man allegedly exposed the handle of a pistol in the waistband of his pants.

Fearing for his safety, the driver dropped the man off a few streets away and contacted police.

Officers from Newcastle City Local Area Command later attended a home in Newcastle Road, Jesmond, and arrested a 24-year-old man.

During a search of the premises, police seized a replica semi-automatic pistol from beneath the refrigerator.

Police took the man to Waratah Police Station, where he was charged with possess unauthorised pistol.

The man appeared in Newcastle Local Court today (Thursday 5 November 2015), where he was refused bail to face the same court on Thursday 17 December 2015.
