Academy of St. Martin in The field Workshops

The Academy will be presenting our very first Family Cushion Concert  at 1pm on Sunday 22nd June at Cecil Sharp House in Camden. This fantastic new event is a great way for the whole family to enjoy the brilliant sound of the Academy. The afternoon includes workshops for beginners and youngsters who already play an instrument, where they’ll get to work with members of the Academy on a piece everyone will play together in the concert.

The workshops are followed by the concert itself, which will include Romanian folk music from Bartok and other orchestral masterpieces from across Europe.

We are looking forward to sharing our music with participants young and old so don’t miss this unique opportunity to take part in some amazing music-making!

To book, simply download a form from our website here, where you can also find out more about the concert.

AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA CONCERTS IN JUNE AND JULY

MAHLER 4 & SIBELIUS 6
17-28 June

Under Richard Tognetti’s direction, the ACO’s Beethoven 9 concerts won Limelight’s Best Orchestral Concert in 2012 and in June the Australian Chamber Orchestra tackle the biggest symphonic configuration in their history and two ACO premieres in one concert, with Mahler 4 & Sibelius 6.

Tognetti explores how astounding and diverse the symphonic experience can be, pairing the shortest and sweetest of all Mahler’s symphonies, the ‘Heavenly’ Symphony No.4, with Sibelius’ serenely beautiful 6th Symphony, which the composer said always reminded him ‘of the scent of the first snow.’

PIANO QUINTETS

12-16 July

In July, ACO Principal Violin Satu Vänskä performs firecracker showpiece Subito on the ACO’s Stradivarius violin, launching into a chamber music concert of Slavic melancholy and joy – Piano Quintets.

Written just prior to the Nazi invasion of the USSR, Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet is a dramatic and harrowing premonition of the coming terror.

Melting away the turbulence of Shostakovich is the bright, melodious joy of Dvořák’s piano quintet, one of the greatest pieces of chamber music in the canon, performed by Finnish pianist Paavali Jumppanen, internationally regarded for performances of “immense power and an extraordinary range of colours” (New York Times).

SYDNEY YOUTH ORCHESTRA With Simon Tedeschi

SYDNEY YOUTH ORCHESTRA

With Simon Tedeschi

5 June, 7pm

Simon Tedeschi joins the Sydney Youth Orchestra for the second concert in the 2014 subscription series at City Recital Hall. Playing Grieg’s Piano Concerto, one of his few large scale works, Tedeschi adds his experience to the vibrancy of the youth orchestra in what promises to be an exceptional night for concertgoers.

The concert begins with the Overture from Glinka’s Russlan and Ludmilla.  Quite a curtain-raiser, bursting forth with an assertive motto for brass, winds and timpani, it is a uniquely Russian combination of earthy exuberance and heroic feeling.  The strings develop the piece into a lyrical passage and together the orchestra brings the piece to a rousing conclusion.

Finally, enjoy the uplifting sounds of Dvorak’s Symphony from the New World. This work was number 6 on the ABC’s Classic 100 and features one of the best known largo melodies of all time. This concert featuring the Sydney Youth Orchestra, conducted by Max McBride and featuring Simon Tedeschi will be one to remember. Book your tickets today.
