People and Place: Fitzmaurice and Baylis Streets, Wagga Wagga

Fitzmaurice and Baylis Street Walking Tours

The Museum of the Riverina and Charles Sturt University Regional Archives invite you to take a walk with us downtown as we explore the many layers of history in Wagga Wagga’s former and current main streets.

Curator and historian, Dr Nancy Blacklow has many stories to tell as she leads two distinct walking expeditions:

1. Fitzmaurice Street: Listen to tales of the early days of Wagga, from the first banks and police quarters to the history of Chinese settlement in the area. With such a deep history, there are many fascinating stories to hear on this tour.

2. Baylis Street: This tour will explore some of the 20th century developments of the city, examining buildings and businesses that used to, and still thrive and flourish in the main street of Wagga Wagga.

The first Fitzmaurice Street  on Monday 17 March at 5:30pm is booked out. It will be repeated at 8am on Tuesday 18 March and bookings are still available for this walk.

The Baylis Street tour will take place at 5:30pm on Wednesday 19 March and will be repeated at 8am on Thursday 20 March.

Each tour has a duration of two hours and participants are requested to wear comfortable walking shoes.

FEBRUARY
Thursday 27 7:00pm Song Company presents Fire of Love. This concert
explores the fire of emotion stretching all the way to the
classic songs of Jacques Brel and Cole Porter. And some
recent but equally poignant love songs by Bon Iver and
Pink prove our point: love is eternal.

MARCH
Thursday 20 7:30pm Musica Viva presents Sitkovetsky Trio. This awardwinning
trio of acclaimed young solosits is conquering the
globe with its unusual blend of dazzling virtuosity and
heartfelt, thoughtful artistry. Their delight in playing
together reaches out across the footlights to touch
audiences in music by Smetana, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky
and a new work by Carl Vine.

Thursday 27 1:00pm Free Lunchtime Concert – American cellist Eugene
Friesen. Four time Grammy Award Winner Friesen has
broken new ground for the cello, using it in a wide
variety of non-classical settings and creating new
techniques to expand its role as a solo and accompanying
instrument.

APRIL
Thursday 3 1:00pm Free Lunchtime Concert. University of Newcastle staff
perform a range of instruments and genres.

Thursday 10 1:00pm Free Lunchtime Concert – Romano Crivici.
Crivici’s music has its roots in pop, contemporary,
classical and native Australian sources…simple, haunting
melodic patterns.
