THE WOLFE BROTHERS CHASE THE DREAM IN 2014

MORE TOUR DATES ADDED

Tasmania’s favourite sons The Wolfe Brothers have burst into 2014 full steam ahead with their ‘eye of the tiger’ approach to chasing their dream. The rockin’ country band continue to ride the wave that started for them almost 18 months ago when they captured the attention of the nation, and were voted into second place in the final of the nationally televised show Australia’s Got Talent.

“There is only one way to make dreams come true and that is through hard work,” says Tom Wolfe. “This is something all four of us agree on and live by. The good thing is we actually love doing everything that is required to be successful in this business. We are having the time of our lives right now”.

Since their time on Australia’s Got Talent in late 2012, the band have been on the road touring with Lee Kernaghan and playing to sell-out crowds across the country. Their debut album IT’S ON was released in January 2013 and so far has spawned three Top 10 singles, including their first #1 song and #1 video The Girl, The Bottle, The Memory. In their first year, they not only won the hearts of the nation, but also recognition by their peers. The Wolfe Brothers were nominated for four Golden Guitar Awards at this year’s Australian Country Music Awards.

“Just to be nominated was amazing for us,” says drummer Casey Kostiuk. “To be nominated in four categories blew us away, especially being one of the finalists for Highest Selling Album of the Year. The year 2013 was a great start for us”.

None of this was overnight success though, the band have certainly earned their stripes over the years. The Wolfe Brothers consists of two brothers, Nick and Tom Wolfe, and their two best mates, guitarist Brodie Rainbird and drummer Casey Kostiuk. They all grew up together on the same road just outside of Hobart. During their high school years they all started playing music together in different bands covering glam rock and heavy metal. After leaving school they all got together to form The Wolfe Brothers and for six years were weekend warriors playing covers in pubs and clubs across Tasmania. Their onstage energy, combined with their tight sound earned them a legion of fans across the home state – everyone loved to party at their local with The Wolfe Brothers whenever they were in town.

When the band decided to record some original songs they were drawn to the music that they loved most – modern country rock. The brothers grew up on a healthy diet of Australian country music, thanks to their mum, and the rock element came from their dad who still drums in his own rock band. After recording a four-track EP and selling thousands of copies, the band put their own money into recording a full length album which became their debut effort – IT’S ON. After laying down the tracks for the album in their bedrooms on a portable recording system they were signed for management by Stephen White Management [SWM], who also manages Lee Kernaghan.

SWM took the recordings to a friend in Nashville by the name of Luke Wooten. Luke is one of Nashville’s hottest producers (he has produced albums for Dierks Bentley, Kellie Pickler and is currently working with Brad Paisley). He loved the sound of the band and agreed to mix what was literally a bedroom recording. The end result is IT’S ON and it’s no surprise the album has earned acclaim around the country. The band finally met up with Luke in Nashville in June 2013 when they performed at the CMA Global Artists Party. After some late night bonding in various honky tonks around the country music city, they all became friends. Luke will fly to Australia in March and to produce the band’s second album, which is due to be recorded in Byron Bay at Studio 301. The band have spent the month of February locked away recording demo tracks of the new songs for their second release.

“We are incredibly excited about recording this next album from the start with Luke,” says Nick Wolfe. “He is a gifted producer who delivers sonically incredible work. We are all very happy with the batch of new songs that we have to choose from for the album. The hard part will be choosing what songs make it onto the album, we’ve got a short list of about 30 new songs”.

The Wolfe Brothers continue to tour with Lee Kernaghan’s Beautiful Noise tour throughout 2014 and are also headlining their own shows all around Australia. Their third and current single Lovin’ In The Summertime is climbing the Australian Country Music Charts and in true The Wolfe Brothers style, they still haven’t stopped working! It is all go… go… go… for The Wolfe Brothers – It’s On!

Don’t miss these opportunities to check out The Wolfe Brothers in concert – this is the band who are putting the ‘rock’ back into country! Tickets are on sale now.

Review: The Book Thief (2013)

TheBookThief

I suppose its fair to say that most German children were not exactly to blame for the Holocaust.

I suppose I should say that The Book Thief was a masterpiece of cinema and a very important film etc. but I did find it somewhat problematic.

As a child’s eye view of the horrors of Germany during WWII it performed admirably, if not somewhat apologetic most of the time (after all every German hid a Jewish runaway in their Cellar NOT, no one knew what was happening NOT etc.).

It did tend to gloss over the appalling nature of the Third Reich, but then from a child’s perspective the world is always somewhat limited and pure around them. I can forgive it therefore for not really being a serious holocaust piece and a reflection of the insular nature of youth.

I have never much enjoyed Geoffrey Rush, I have always found his acting pompous and over intense, he actually worked very well in this role as the loving father making the best of bad times around him.

Perhaps the worst decision in the film was the Narrator who popped up now and then in the style of a children’s story, warranted points for making him the grim reaper in a sort of twist on this style, but nevertheless the film would have been much better without it.

In some ways their are parallels in this film to Benigni’s Life is Beautiful, but where Life is a sick “humourous” twist on the Holocaust, this film manages to stay far enough away from it to not be tainted with the same brush.

Review: Forces speciales (2011)

This is a french film about…. you guessed it, their Special Forces!forces-speciales-2011-21326-1412573642

It borrows very heavily from the Hollywood style and but for the French dialogue you could be mistaken for thinking this is a standard Hollywood action flick.

A nosey journalist gets kidnapped by the Taliban and because she’s female, all of France bends over backwards to rescue her. Then follows a major journey across the desert of Pakistan and snowy mountains to reach the safety of Afghanistan.

I know it sounds like I didn’t like this one much, but all in all (taking it for what it is) it is not a bad film with a pretty spectacular ending.

Review: Damnation Alley (1977)

Ok this is not the best movie ever made, but taken from a book by Roger Zelazny and with a damnation-alley-lobby-card-7 (1)script written by Lukas Heller (Dirty Dozen, Flight of the Phoenix) it has a lot going for it.

This is a post apocalyptic movie starring George Peppard and Jan Michael Vincent. The third world war kicks off as the movie begins and we follow a team in a missile silo launching the nukes.

After the war the earth is laid waste and the group set about surviving at their military base. After a while, it appears simply out of boredom, they set off in massive land vehicles in search of a mysterious signal.

Now you might be saying, I have heard all this pretty much before, but remember Damnation Alley used this plot line back in the seventies.

Out of control sedan lands on Bondi Beach

An elderly man is in hospital after his car ran off the road, along a footpath, through a park and landed on Bondi Beach this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the southern end of Bondi Beach about 1.30pm today (Tuesday 4 February 2014) responding to reports a man was unconscious within the sedan.

NSW Ambulance Paramedics treated the 90-year-old driver at the scene before taking him to St Vincent’s Hospital.

Police have been told the Pulsar sedan was being driven along Lamrock Avenue when it veered across to the western footpath in Campbell Parade and travelled about 20m along the footpath, hitting chairs and tables outside a café.

The vehicle then hit several street signs before crossing Campbell Parade onto the eastern footpath where it then travelled about 60m down an embankment in Bondi Park before continuing through a barrier onto the promenade, then onto the sand.
