Residents invited to stop in for a chat at Port Stephens Community Engagement Day

The Port Stephens community is invited to a special engagement day this week.

Hosted by Port Stephens Local Area Command – in conjunction with the Port Stephens Council – the Community Engagement Day will be held between 10am and 2pm on Thursday (16 April 2015), at Barnett Fields at Raymond Terrace.
In addition to local police, the day will showcase specialist commands within the NSW Police Force, including PolAir, Marine Area Command, Mounted Unit, Police Rescue, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Tactical Operations Unit and PCYC.

Acting Port Stephens Local Area Commander, Acting Superintendent Tony Townsend, said the event is a great opportunity for the community to learn more about day-to-day policing.

“The Community Engagement Day provides an opportunity for the community to interact directly with officers from a variety of units and gain an insider perspective of the different work that we undertake on a daily basis,” A/Supt Townsend said.

“It also gives us the opportunity to talk directly with members of the community in a relaxed, informal environment.

“We will also be joined by local Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Service, RAAF Dog Unit and other agencies, including Port Stephens Council Ranger Ralph, who will have displays, conduct demonstrations, provide advice, or chat about their experiences.

“All are welcome to come along, meet your local police and emergency services, and learn more about what we do, especially within the Port Stephens community,” A/Supt Townsend said.

Motorists can also pop into the car park of the Raymond Terrace Netball Courts (off Port Stephens Street), where members of the Raymond Terrace Men’s Shed will replace their number plate screws with special irreversible screws free of charge.
Raymond Terrace Athletics Club and the PCYC are catering for the event and kids can play on the jumping castle.

The event is free and all are welcome. Parking will be available at King Park off Newline Road opposite Barnett Fields and in the Raymond Terrace CBD.

Whats in a name?!

A number of people ask us where the name Radio 16 comes from. Back when Radio 16 first got going it was originally intended to be a network of stations covering various regional areas and Sydney on 1611 am, hence “16”.

During discussions for the lease of these frequencies we did some research and realized that simply no one listens to off band stations primarily because they are plainly not on the broadcast band and receivable by the majority of radio’s. Whilst this might seem like common sense there were all sorts of urban myths thrown at us about pushing the dial to the end and the 1% of radio’s that go up that far. Every test we did all we could hear was electrical noise from every surrounding electronic device (like the computer in every home!), it seems AM wants to be be bang on the dial and if its not forget it.

Asking people about these “ghost” stations that their owners had talked up was just met with blank stares. We looked at the wealth of commercially available data demonstrating the sharp decline in AM listening since the 1970’s and realized why. We decided running such stations would just be a waste of electricity.

Not to be disheartened we compared the concept of internet only broadcasting and data like the $4 Million “Enduring concepts Communications and media in Australia” report prepared by the ACMA and it became clear that Australians were looking to the Internet for their media almost exclusively.

Deciding we wanted people to actual listen to us we opted for the Internet! (a non-brainer). We liked the name “Radio 16” so decided to keep it.

Radio 16 has become the name of true innovation in the Hunter Region being the first station to show real time listening figures not based on presenters or owners talking up who is actually listening; but computer accurate logs of exactly who listened and when.

VIVALDI UNWIRED at City Recital Hall

VIVALDI UNWIRED
6 – 15 May 2015

This May, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra presents Vivaldi Unwired, showcasing the Orchestra and Vivaldi as you never imagined before!

A shared belief in the transformative power of music and a spirit of intrepid adventure led award-winning British composer Max Richter to re-imagine the baroque classic, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons for orchestra and synthesiser, and for Paul Dyer AO to take up the challenge to present the recomposed piece with period instruments, taking the reins of the synthesiser himself.

The result is an audacious creation that takes the audience through the same landscape of spring, summer, autumn and winter but with a renewed sense of the brilliance of Vivaldi’s work. Richter’s Recomposed – Vivaldi: The Four Seasons is in turns beautiful, peaceful and serene, yet also wild, passionate and intensely emotional, proving great music can flourish under radically different interpretations and still retain its indestructible genius.

Vivaldi Unwired includes Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, widely recognised as amongst the best baroque compositions written, C.P.E Bach’s Concerto for flute (arr. soprano saxophone) featuring Brandenburg favourite Christina Leonard, Vivaldi’s Concerto op. 3 no. 8 from L’estro armonico and finally discover Vivaldi, the indestructible baroque genius in a new light with Richter’s Recomposed – Vivaldi: The Four Seasons, beautifully led by Guest Concertmaster Brendan Joyce.

Don’t miss this baroque adventure with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra.

Four fire crews extinguish mail truck fire on Hume Highway

A truck carrying letters on behalf of Australia Post has caught fire on the Hume Highway sending traffic into chaos on one of the key thoroughfares between Sydney and Melbourne for over two hours.

It took at least four Rural Fire Service trucks to extinguish the blaze which resulted in a large amount of letters being destroyed that were on their way from Sydney to Melbourne.

“Postal letters were sprawled out across the highway,” said Declan McCarthy who had to wait over two hours to pass through the fire scene.

An Australia Post spokeswoman said that the company was currently working through the information to advise customers of the impact. The truck is owned by a third-party contractor.

“Fortunately and most importantly, no one was injured in the incident,” she said in a statement.

The fire started after the truck appeared to crash into an embankment on the highway just south of Gundagai in south-west NSW.

It took fire crews almost two hours to get the blaze under control. The driver escaped before the truck was completely engulfed in flames.

By 5pm on Saturday the shell of the truck was still emitting smoke and a fuel leakage had kept the south-bound lane of the Hume Highway closed.

HAZMAT teams have been called in to clear the fuel off the road, a RFSNSW spokesman said.

Drivers are being told to expect delays.

“We expect that lane to remain closed for the next few hours,” the spokesman said.
