About 12:50am today (Saturday), officers attached Highway Patrol officers allegedly observed an on-coming vehicle travelling at high speed in a 110km/h zone on the Hume Highway at Woomargama, south of Holbrook.

Police followed the vehicle, which was displaying red P1 P-plates, and allegedly detected the car on radar travelling at 146km/h.

The vehicle was stopped and the driver provided police with a current P1 driver’s licence, which is restricted to 90km/h.

The driver was booked for exceed speed over 45km/h and his licence immediately suspended for six months.

The number plates were not confiscated because the vehicle wasn’t owned by the driver, police say.

A Victorian learner motorcyclist will appear in court today following a pursuit in Gunning yesterday, where the rider allegedly reached speeds of up to 200km/h.

About 4.10pm (Sunday 7 June 2015), officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command attempted to stop a motorcyclist travelling north along the Hume Highway.

The motorcyclist allegedly failed to stop and a pursuit ensued, where the rider reached speeds of up to 200km/h.

A short time later, the motorcyclist was stopped and searched by police, who allegedly located a knife on the rider.

The 19-year-old Victorian man was arrested and taken to Goulburn Police Station, where he was charged with police pursuit – driving dangerously, exceed speed more than 45km/h and custody of a knife in a public place.

He was refused bail, to appear at Goulburn Local Court today (Monday 8 June 2015).

A man has been charged after returning an alleged alcohol reading of over four times the legal limit near Albury this morning.

About 9.50am (Sunday 7 June 2015), officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command stopped a Mitsubishi Magna station wagon travelling north along the Olympic Highway, Culcairn, about 50km north of Albury.

Police spoke to the male driver before submitting him to a roadside breath test, which returned a positive result.

The 41-year-old Victorian man was taken to Culcairn Police Station, where he underwent a breath test analysis, allegedly returning a reading of 0.204.

He has been issued a Court Attendance Notice for high range PCA, to appear at Albury Local Court on Tuesday 23 June 2015.

Operation Stay Alert, the NSW Police Force’s traffic operation for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, began at 12.01am on Friday (5 June 2015) and runs until 11.59pm tomorrow (Monday 8 June 2015).

Motorists are reminded that double demerit penalties remain in place for speeding, seatbelt and helmet offences.

A child has died and two adults are seriously injured after a single-vehicle crash on the Hume Highway in the state’s south this morning.

The crash happened about 9.15am (Sunday 7 June 2015), 10km south of Tarcutta, when a northbound Volkswagon sedan left the highway and hit a tree.

A woman and child travelling in the back seat were trapped for an hour before being released.

The four-year-old boy died at the scene.

The woman and the 39-year-old man, who was driving, were airlifted to Canberra Hospital by the Snowy Hydro South Care Helicopter.

Both adults are reported to be in a serious condition.

The Hume Highway’s northbound lanes were closed for the helicopter to land. It will remain closed with diversions in place while police continue their investigations.

All southbound lanes are open.

WARRANTS have been issued for a Melbourne man who failed to appear in Albury Court yesterday on charges of possessing a laser pointer and extendable steel baton.

The details of the Melbourne man’s arrest were outlined in police papers presented to the court.

They also allege Tyron David Robinson was shining the laser pointer at truck drivers on the Hume Highway.

Magistrate Tony Murray was told police were patrolling the highway just before 1am on April 20.

They received information about truckies being flashed in the eyes with a laser by a man walking south of Holbrook.

The officers found Robinson, who was walking on the highway shoulder with a dog and carrying a full container of fuel.

He was asked whether he had a laser pointer and immediately produced one from the right pocket of his hoodie.

Police tested the pointer and it emitted a bright green beam.

They asked Robinson, 30, of Mont Albert, why he was shining the light into the eyes of truck drivers.

He denied doing so and said: “I was waving it out in front of me so they knew I was here.”

Robinson explained his car ran out of petrol near the intersection of the Hume Highway and Olympic Way about 40 kilometres south from his present location.

A truck driver gave him a lift to Holbrook so he could get fuel and he was just starting his long walk back.

The officers asked whether he had any other prohibited items and he indicated that he did not.

But a search of his backpack uncovered a steel expandable baton which was 40cm long when extended.

He was asked about it and said: “Oh, sorry. I forgot that was there. It shouldn’t have left the house. Somebody left it at my place after a party.”

Both the laser and baton were seized by police, who gave Robinson a lift back to his car.

Police gave him field court attendance notices.

Mr Murray has ordered the seized items be forfeited.
