Inquiries continue to locate man after foot chase near Queanbeyan

Inquiries are continuing to locate a man after a foot chase near the NSW/ACT border this afternoon.

About 12.30pm (Wednesday 13 April 2015), police were patrolling in High Street Queanbeyan when they noticed a man, matching the description of a person wanted on an outstanding warrant.

A foot chase began, however police lost sight of him.

Police from Monaro Local Area Command and ACT Policing began a search for the man.

He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in his 30s and with brown short hair.

When he was last seen, the man was wearing a pair of black shorts.

Police investigate collision – Kooragang (near Newcastle)

Police are investigating a two-vehicle collision outside Newcastle today.

Shortly before 1pm (Wednesday 13 April 2016), emergency services were called to a head-on collision between a car and a truck on Tourle Street Bridge, Kooragang.

A 25-year-old female driver was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.

The male driver of the truck was taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing.

Traffic and Highway Patrol with the assistance of Crime Scene investigators are currently attending and have commenced an investigation into the incident.

No further information is available at this stage.

Introducing our first Composer in Residence

Sally Beamish
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Sally Beamish as our first ever Composer in Residence in 2016/17, in a partnership set to run until the end of our Diamond Jubliee Season in 2018/19. Beamish, who celebrates her own 60th birthday this season, is one of Britain’s best-known contemporary composers, renowned for her versatility. As Composer in Residence, Sally’s music will be a central part of our programming over the next three seasons, both in the UK and abroad, including past works and new commissions. We look forward to sharing our performances of Sally’s compositions with you over the next few years.

This Friday we celebrate Sir Neville Marriner’s 92nd birthday at Cadogan Hall in a programme of Mozart and Bizet with pianist Till Fellner, before finishing the 2015/16 London season as we started with the Chamber Ensemble in concert at Kings Place. The University of Newcastle Orchestra will perform Anton Dvoraks famous Gypsy Song ‘Songs my Mother Taught Me’ as a centre piece of their special Mother’s Day Concert. Songs by the icon songwriter Franz Schubert will be sung and immediately followed by an original composition in present day song-writing giving the audience a chance to travel over two centuries and compare the creative essence of the song writing genre.

Man charged after alleged drug and firearm possession – Chisholm (near Maitland)

Police have charged a man after he was allegedly found with drugs and a firearm near Maitland overnight.

Shortly after 10pm yesterday, (Tuesday 12 April 2016), highway patrol officers detected a red Toyota Yaris speeding along Raymond Terrace Road, Chisholm.

A search of the vehicle was conducted and Officers attached to Central Hunter Highway Patrol allegedly located 60 grams of methylamphetamine, custom made .22 calibre pistol, four rounds of ammunition and $3000 in cash.

A 23-year-old man was arrested and taken to Maitland Police station where he was charged with breach of bail, drive whilst disqualified, possess loaded firearm in a public place, possess unregistered firearm, not keep firearm safely secured, supply an indictable quantity of prohibited drug, two counts of possess prohibited drug, possess knife in public place, possess prescribed restricted substance, possess prohibited weapon and deal in proceeds of crime.

He was refused bail to appear at Maitland Local Court today (Wednesday 13 April 2016).

Second person dies following crash – Duri, near Tamworth

A second person has now died following a fatal crash in the state’s north.

About 3.30pm yesterday (Monday 11 April 2016), a Hyundai Elantra was travelling north on Werris Creek Road, Duri, towards Tamworth, when it collided head on with a Hyundai i30 travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the i30, a 76-year-old man, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. His passenger, a 77-year-old woman, was taken to Tamworth Hospital suffering a possible broken eye socket and a broken arm.

The 32-year-old driver of the Elantra was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition. He passed away early this morning (Tuesday 12 April 2016).

Police from Northern Tablelands Crash Investigation Unit attended the scene and conducted inquiries. The road was closed for about five and a half hours as investigations took place.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to come forward.

In particular, they are asking for a man who was travelling behind the Elantra, and claimed to have witnessed the lead-up to the crash, as well as the crash itself, to come forward and tell police what he saw.

The man left the scene before police arrived and his details were not obtained.

Witnesses are urged to contact Northern Tablelands Crash Investigation Unit on (02) 6768 2890 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Renewed warning as search continues for man who escaped Riverina prison

Police have renewed warnings not to approach a man who escaped from a correctional centre near Albury last week.

Artur Wojik, 45, was last seen at the minimum-security correctional centre on Jingellic Road, Mannus, about 130km north of Albury, at 5.30pm Thursday (7 April 2016).

The prisoner was noticed missing at 7.30am the following day (Friday 8 April 2016), and a search was initiated.

Police from Albury Local Area Command have renewed their warnings for anyone who sees the man, NOT to approach him, instead to contact Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Artur Wojik is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 170-175cm tall, of a medium build, with brown hair and blue eyes. He has a tattoo on his right bicep and was last seen wearing prison greens.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen a man matching this description to contact Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Police have not ruled out the possibility that the escapee could be interstate, especially Victoria or Queensland.

Police appeal for information about missing teenager – Singleton

Police from Hunter Valley Local Area Command are appealing for information to help locate a missing teenager.

Ashleigh McTaggart, aged 16, was last seen about 9pm last Friday (1 April 2016), leaving her home on Kelso Street, Singleton.

Police hold concerns for Ashleigh’s welfare, as she has not made contact with relatives.

Ashleigh is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 170-175cm tall, with a medium build, long blonde hair, brown eyes and freckles.

Anyone with information about her whereabouts is urged to contact Hunter Valley Police Station on (02) 6542 6999 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Teens charged following alleged high-speed pursuit – Goulburn

Two teenagers have been charged following an alleged high-speed pursuit towards Goulburn today.

Just before 6am (Saturday 9 April 2016), police detected a blue Holden Commodore sedan allegedly speeding at 167km/h in a 110km/h marked zone on the Hume Highway near Marulan.

It will be alleged the vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated, where the Commodore reached speeds of up to 230km/h.

At the Goulburn bypass, road spikes were deployed. The vehicle continued for a short distance before stopping.

Two 17-year-old boys in the vehicle, which is alleged to have been stolen, were arrested at the scene and taken to Goulburn Police Station.

The Learner driver underwent a breath test analysis, which returned an alleged positive reading of 0.055.

He has been charged with exceed speed over 45km/h, Skye’s Law (police pursuit), speed dangerously, and unaccompanied Learner.

The passenger has been charged with aggravated break and enter and be carried in conveyance without consent of owner.

The pair was refused bail, to appear at a children’s court today.
