I enjoyed your recent article “Whats in a name”. I am retired from radio after several decades and have heard rumors of these off band stations in Sydney. Now I own alot of radio’s but not one of them could tune any of these stations (I went through one day and tried out of curiosity). I think the point you missed was also that modern radio’s tune digitally, the days of the knob that you can “push to the end” are long gone. The average punter is now presented with a led screen that very very rarely reaches to any of these strange places. I like to think of off band stations as something like CB radio, its still there but no one has bought one of the special wirelesses in years. My favourite is the Brady Bunch Movie where Greg still drives to school in a station wagon with a CB radio and an 8 track (“try the CB Radio..but no one has answered us in 20 years!”). He would be your average off band listener, so someone is indeed listening but only a minute handful of trainspotter type people.

I just recently found Radio 16 through Radio Brisbane up here. There’s not much I enjoy on Radio anymore, but after tuning in for national Mornings and National Drive I have found a station I can listen to again. Keep up the good work.

Very sad news the passing of Chrissie Amphlett from the Divinyls, the days of her bouncing around in a school uniform belting out songs about things “good girls” dont talk about will be sadly missed! I think the lasting legacy of the band will probably be the track “Elsie” which is still just as hauntingly beautiful every time I hear it. The funniest interview I ever saw Chrissie do was when she was invited onto a panel for one of those horrible mid-morning womens TV shows to try and give the show some edge. Watching these blonded “personalities” and Chrissie try to find some type of common ground on womens issues was a true classic.

Are you the only station in Newcastle that plays the music you do? A neighbour told me there was a station that you could hear if you put a paperclip in the Radio turner or something. We would not do this as it sounds very dangerous. All we can tune on our Radio is the ….. We like Radio 16 much better. I spend a lot of my time on my computer and its always there to listen to.

I am particularly interested in music from the 1930’s and 40’s. Radio 16 is the best of its type around. I am pleased to see you have gone for the best sound quality possible. Usually this music is delegated to horrible sounding AM and often there is so much other noise its hard to hear the music properly. I know the
source material is often not the best, but this is made far worse when played on AM Radio. Your Internet stream is the best sounding I have ever heard.
