SLIM DUSTY GALA AWARD WINNERS

The Slim Dusty Centre was the scene of the sixth annual Slim Dusty Community Mateship and Youth Awards, however, the first time the awards were presented at a gala dinner. More than 130 people attended and helped celebrate and acknowledge some of the key values supported by the Slim Dusty Foundation, in memory of Slim, including community, mateship, learning, fairness and family.

Two awards were presented on the night and they were awarded to two very worthwhile people. The recipient of the Community Mateship Award was David James from the Northern Territory. Keenly community minded, David is often called upon to help out family, neighbours and the broader community. He is a great believer in learning from the past and applying that knowledge to the future. Renowned for supporting the underdog, David has assisted many a needy mate into work opportunities, improving their lives. “I was absolutely stumped out for words. It was the last thing that I would have expected,” he said. David, 74, was unable to travel to the gala dinner due to bushfires threatening his and neighbouring stations. “Some of our country has paddocks that are 20km in and no road access. You just have to wait for the fire to come out. We have just sacrificed our paddock to save our neighbours’ paddock. It is what you do.”

David waited on the telephone and heard the announcement live that he was the Mateship winner. As he responded, his voice was clearly heard throughout the gallery and it was obvious to everyone in the crowd how moved he was. Following his win, David spoke of his admiration of Slim Dusty “If you asked someone on the street who the Prime Minister was, say eight years ago, or 30 years ago, most wouldn’t know. But if you asked who the King was, every Aussie knows that would be Slim Dusty. “He was the King when I was a boy, and he’s still King today.”

Melbourne’s Khurram Jahangir Khan won the Community Youth Award. Khurram, at 19 years of age, is largely involved in volunteering his time for the community, including helping senior citizens, young refugees and people with disabilities. He sees his community work as a tool to assist him when he obtains his goal of becoming a Doctor of Medicine. “I am highly pleased to say that it was an immense honour to arrive at Kempsey, and meet such beautiful, loving and generous people,” Khurram said. “I can never ever explain my excitement and heartfelt honour due to the award I have received. Also, at last, I got to know the song of Slim Dusty my grandma loves and it is ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and I love this song too. I am highly grateful for all things the Slim Dusty Foundation mates have done for me.” Khurram is completing a Bachelor of Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne. His acceptance speech at the gala dinner inspired all those who attended.

Kempsey man, Brian Irvine, who was one of the Finalists on the night added “Having events like this highlights the importance of the Slim Dusty Centre to our community and beyond. Last Friday night was a great success and the entertainment, food and presentation was very classy.”

Master of Ceremonies, Tania Kernaghan, entertained the crowd and shared the microphone with Anne Kirkpatrick, local talents Tommy Kennedy, Amos Morris and Slim’s own Travelling Country Band. “I was absolutely thrilled to be a part of the Awards on Friday night and it was particularly fitting that they were held at the superb Slim Dusty Centre. After having the opportunity to meet with the finalists and to chat with them about all they had achieved so far, each and every one of them, I believe are winners in their own right. I encourage everyone to support these Awards in the future, they are a reminder of how proud it makes you feel to be an Australian”.

Keynote speaker for Mates, Keith Thompson, from Thompson’s Transport, cleverly engaged the crowd with his humour and reflection on the famous trucking journey across the Nullarbor with Slim Dusty at the wheel. Representing Youth, keynote speaker Tom Burton, Director of Communications for the North Coast Institute of TAFE, was a positive advocate for improved futures for youth through education, and reinforced the progress being made under the MOU between TAFE and the Slim Dusty Centre as a workplace training facility.

Organisers would like to sincerely thank all the sponsors who supported the gala dinner and congratulate everyone that was nominated for an award.

THE WOLFE BROTHERS BRING THEIR NOTHIN’ BUT TROUBLE TOUR TO THE 2015 TAMWORTH COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL

Country rockers The Wolfe Brothers are thrilled to announce a very special guest for their show at the 2015 Tamworth Country Music Festival. Aussie rock legend and Rose Tattoo front man Angry Anderson will be joining them for their only Tamworth Festival show. After an impromptu performance together at a charity event earlier in 2014, Angry and the boys resolved to join forces again and the festival proved the perfect place for that wish to come to fruition.

In recent months, Nashville heavyweights have been collaborating with their rock n roll counterparts to create an incredible partnership of country-roots-rock. One recent example is former Nirvana drummer and now head Foo Fighter Dave Grohl teaming up with the Zac Brown Band for several memorable performances. Modern country and rock genres seem to effortlessly combine, giving a new vibe to some classic hits. It was only a matter of time before this unique collaboration of rock and country made its way to Australian shores. With The Wolfe Brothers live shows well reputed for their high energy performances, the upcoming Tamworth concert with a bona fide rock legend is guaranteed to be high voltage and unforgettable.

“It’s no secret that we like to rock our country and we’re very excited to have the original bad boy and Aussie rock legend joining us on this one,” says Nick Wolfe. “I think it’ll push some boundaries and challenge some traditional ideals, but hey, that’s just what we do”. With their new album Nothin’ But Trouble riding high in the charts, fans can expect a new re-energised show. “We’ll aim to push our usual 110% energy levels to 120% and make this special event with Angry a night to remember – for us and the audience.”

Like the true champions of country music that they are, The Wolfe Brothers always look forward to catching up with music-lovers at the festival each year. “Tamworth is a special place for all in the Australian country scene,” says Nick. “I think it brings out the best in artists, to see the dedication of fans who’ve travelled country-wide and often return year after year, makes us want to pull a bit extra out of the tank and give them all we can.”

The Wolfe Brothers have experienced an incredible year in 2014. With the release of their second long-player Nothin’ But Trouble their music has been searing up the charts and winning them the hearts of a whole new legion of fans. The album burst onto the ARIA Country Chart at #2 and entered the ARIA mainstream chart at #16. The first single from the new release – That Kinda Night – smashed into #1 position on both country radio and the CMC video charts. It’s no surprise that their latest album was so warmly received by Australian audiences, after all, their debut It’s On rocketed through the charts, firmly cementing the band as one to watch.

The band are the first to point out that they couldn’t have achieved so much if not for the backing of the Australian public. “This past year has been a dream,” says Nick. “From recording and releasing the new album to the countless shows right across the country, we’ve been blessed with the support of our very loyal and dedicated fans. To see our new music being embraced the way it has is astounding, and it only makes us want to work harder and be better at what we do.”

Tamworth Country Music Festival is the start of another big year for The Wolfe Brothers. It kicks off the start of a huge national tour that will take them to all corners of Australia. “We’re gonna play as many places as we can, write the best music we can and keep being ourselves cos that’s what has got us this far,” says Nick.

The Wolfe Brothers have also received two nominations at the 2015 Golden Guitar awards; Group or Duo of the Year and Single of the Year. Don’t miss your chance to be part of country rock history as The Wolfe Brothers and special guest Angry Anderson rock Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2015. Tickets on sale now.

Amber Lawrence has been nominated in two different categories for the 2015 CMAA Golden Guitar Awards

Amber Lawrence has been nominated in two different categories for the 2015 CMAA Golden Guitar Awards, including Toyota Heritage Song of the Year for “The Lifesaver”, and Female Artist of the Year for her album, ‘Superheroes’, released in September through Social Family Records.

When Amber wrote “The Lifesaver”, she wrote it with the love of her late father, a well known Maroubra Beach surf lifesaver, in her mind and heart. She knew it was a special song from the moment it started to come together, and it’s now apparent that the rest of Australia agrees with her, with her nomination for Toyota Heritage Song of the Year.

“I cried when they read out The Lifesaver. This song means everything to me – I am so happy! And Female Artist of the Year is super cool, too!” said Amber Lawrence, following the exciting news.

Always the hard worker not afraid to get out there and just do it, Amber contributes her love of music and life to her mother and father, and is grateful for every opportunity that comes her way, including previous nominations for what has so far been an elusive Golden Guitar for the popular country singer. With the strength of her new album, ‘Superheroes’, and touching tribute to her father with “The Lifesaver”, 2015 could well be Amber Lawrence’s year to shine and take home her first gong.

The CMAA Golden Guitar Nominations Ceremony, hosted by Catherine Britt and Morgan Evans, also saw Amber perform the first single, “Superhero”, from her new album, ‘Superheroes’.

The Tamworth Country Music Festival takes place from January 16th to 25th, 2015, with Amber performing at Blazes on Friday, January 23rd. The Country Music Awards of Australia (The Golden Guitars) will be held at the Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre on January 24th.

Jimmy Barnes cancels appearance at Deni Ute Muster on doctor’s orders

It is with much regret that Jimmy Barnes has had to cancel his appearance at the Deni Ute Muster on Saturday, 4 October due to ongoing health problems.

Jimmy Barnes has been in hospital for the past few weeks after suffering further complications and setbacks as a result of elective back surgery.  Despite all hope and assurances given that he would be well enough to appear, it is now clear that this will not be the case and his doctors have ordered complete bed rest and organisers wish him a speedy recovery.

Jimmy said today “I’m so sorry, Musterers.  I’ve been hoping and doing everything I can to get myself well enough to join you next weekend but it’s taking longer to bounce back than we thought and I’ve had to pull out under doc’s orders.  The Deni Ute Muster is one of the great Australian events and to miss out on their 16th anniversary is heartbreaking for us all.  Sending special thanks to our friend for stepping in for us at such short notice – Thanks Kasey!”

Having just announced a national tour starting in November, and released her 10th studio album, Bittersweet, Australia’s much loved and Award winning Queen of Country, Kasey Chambers, is returning to the Muster stage and we couldn’t be happier.  Kasey said today “Sorry that Jimmy can’t make the Deni Ute Muster due to doctor’s orders but I’m happy to be stepping in to fill those mighty shoes on Saturday night… I’ve always loved playing at Deni and can’t wait to get that chance again this weekend. Will have to brush up on my Barnsey songs tho …. eek!! Get well Jimmy!”

The Deni Ute Muster is an iconic “bucket list” event for all Australians and with less than a week to go, there’ll be plenty of men, women and kids, and their utes, descending on Deniliquin for the 2014 instalment of the “Muster”.

With only 5 days left until the Deni Ute Muster kicks off its 16th birthday celebrations, the set-up is well and truly underway with Mack the Transporter and Lightning McQueen – two of the stars of the incredibly popular Disney-Pixar animated films Cars and Cars 2 – and the hugely anticipated, record-breaking, supercharged Holden GTS Maloo (declared as the WORLD’s FASTEST UTE) already on their way to Deniliquin.

Also on its way is the 1,000 horsepower JCB GT, a unique ‘one-off’ machine powered by a supercharged Chevrolet V8 big block engine and equipped with a belt driven supercharger and pair of four barrelled Holley carbs.  The JCB GT will be operated by “The Dig”, the nickname given to JCB Demonstrator Matt Lucas who has travelled with the GT from the UK.

The JCB GT will be joined in the Arena by the JCB Dancing Diggers, whose stunning acrobatics have become a YouTube hit.

These exciting drawcards are only part of the popular attractions on tap at the 2014 Deni Ute Muster.

Over the two days fans will be treated to the Bull Ride Spectacular, The Australian National Circle Work Championships, Yarn Bombing a Ute, the Ute Museum, Holden Grunt Off, Holden Barrel Race, Show ‘n’ Shine, Carnivale Corner, the World Record Blue Singlet challenge, helicopter rides, the mechanical bucking bull, woodchop demonstrations and Whip Cracking Championships and many more attractions setting the scene for what will undoubtedly be one hell of a Muster!!

Muster MC’s, The Sunny Cowgirls will also take to the main stage on Saturday afternoon for their own performance that will certainly be one to watch.  We also welcome back AFL Legend Billy Brownless, five time Olympic Medallist Melanie Schlanger and Olympic Swimmer Chris Wright as official Deni Ute Muster ambassadors at this year’s festival.

This fine specimen of motoring excellence will be showcased throughout the weekend and is a definite must-see at this year’s event!

We are also very pleased to announce that the 2014 Deni Ute Muster “Charity of the Year” is a very worthy cause and one that is so essential to maintaining the rural way of life – it is of course the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). The not-for-profit RFDS has been taking the finest care to the furthest corners of Australia since 1928. The Service not only provides 24 hour emergency cover to 90% of the Australian continent, via a modern fleet of specially equipped aircraft, but also delivers a wide range of primary healthcare to the Outback.

The RFDS will also be on ground at the muster showcasing their aeromedical educational simulator. At 9.1m long, 2.4m wide and 3m high, it is a full-sized replica of the cockpit and fuselage of a RFDS King Air B200 aircraft, complete with flight deck and full aeromedical fit-out. Visitors will be able to experience what it’s like to be a pilot, flight nurse, or flying doctor. RFDS staff will be on hand to explain the aircraft’s capabilities, what the medical equipment in these ‘flying intensive care units’ does and share some real-life rescue stories of this Australian icon.

The Deni Ute Muster are also thrilled to welcome back AFL Legend Billy Brownless, Geelong Star Tom Hawkins, 5 time Olympic Medallist Melanie Schlanger and Olympic Swimmer Chris Wright as official Deni Ute Muster ambassadors who will all be attending this year’s festival.

SISTER TRIO DOZZI RELEASE NEW POWERHOUSE SINGLE

Brisbane’s musical juggernaut Dozzi are back with the release of their new single Weakness . Thedozzi trio are riding a wave of momentum on the back of their hugely successful I Need You Tonight which peaked at #1 on the Hot Country Network All Australian Top 20 and the Cool Country 2KA charts, along with entering the CMC Top 50. The sister trio – Andrea, Jesse & Nina – are rapidly earning a name for themselves for their breathtaking three part harmonies and their latest single just goes further to show their versatility.

Weakness is already a favourite at their live shows and showcases – it’s a high energy track set to be a country rock smash. “It was really the fans that picked our new single,” says Jesse. “We’ve always loved the song from the day we wrote it, but it wasn’t until we started playing it live that it really stood out. We always get requests to play the song at our live shows so when it came time to choose the new single, it had to be Weakness.”

The track was written in Nashville by Jesse, Jen Bostic and Chaise Flanders and is a fun take on the role of the ‘bad boy’. “We had been discussing some cool titles during our song writing trip to Nashville and the song idea called ‘He’s My Weakness’ was really strong,” says Jesse. “The song came together really quickly. It’s about that bad boy, the type of guy you know you shouldn’t be involved with but you can’t help being drawn to him… someone your mother wouldn’t want you to date.”

Originally written on acoustic guitar and keyboard, it quickly dawned on the trio that the production of the track could be massive. The finished product is a radio gem that will have music fans singing along at full voice. “We laid the track down in Nashville with some very talented session musicians and are really happy with the rock feel that came through in the end,” says Jesse. “For the recording we had to think about whose voice would suit what part the best and because we all love the song and knew it was strong, we took this very seriously. When we got behind the mic the parts felt right so we’re very happy with the end result.”

Dozzi have been honing their skills around the Southern Queensland music scene since they were young. Harking from a heavily musical family, it was always a natural direction for the three to take the next step into a professional music career. They’ve already been dubbed as an infusion of country superstars The Dixie Chicks and Alanis Morissette by industry heavy weights. Dozzi’s style really is too hard to pigeonhole and each new musical offering shows another side of their abilit8ies. They’ve quickly gathered a large fan base owing to their catchy melodies and high energy, charismatic performances. It’s been an action packed period for the trio which is set to continue with the release of this single and their upcoming national tour. Last year the sisters were crowned Australian Country Music People’s Choice Award for Best Video (for the track Love Away The Bad Days) and have also been invited to perform the national anthem at numerous events.

The girls are now currently working on the video clip for Weakness, which Jesse said showcases the band’s ‘crazy side!’’ “We have decided to do a live clip for this song,” she says. “We want to show everyone different sides of our personalities, and what better way to do that then with a live clip. It’s filled with a heap of our live performances as well as a lot of behind the scenes footage too.” Stay tuned for the clip in the coming weeks

KC COWGIRL MAY HAVE DROPPED CATCHIEST SUMMERTIME SINGLE THIS YEAR

Small town country girl Casi Joy is on fire (much like her hair) with her brand new summertime single “Old Town Lane.” The song features Casi’s imagery filled writing style, along with her smooth, yet powerful vocals. The single, from the singer/songwriter’s upcoming album, is receiving great reviews in the short two weeks it has been available in all online stores.

“Casi’s voice just blew me away.” – Michael Wagener, (Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Motley Crue)Wireworld Studios

“When I first laid eyes on her and heard this amazing crossover sound, I was blown away. From her crowd pleasing stage performances to her powerful, yet beautiful vocals, this is no small town girl. She is on her way to the likenesses of Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift.”
– Duane Woods, Strictly Music Booking and Management Group Inc.
Casi (pronounced Cassie) has been the best kept secret of the midwest for quite some time now. Beginning her music career at age 10, she has produced an album with award winning producer Michael Wagener, performed in front of 500,000 people at the Kansas City Plaza Lighting, just recently played with Rascal Flatts and Brad Paisley, and more. Casi is known for her bright red hair, bright personality, and explosive stage show playing a different instrument almost every song. Her heartfelt lyrics and distinctive, rich tone pull every listener in to her relatable, self written songs. Casi’s new single “Old Town Lane” was written by Casi about a sanctuary of hers at a lake in northern Minnesota. Country music lovers are sent to a feel good place, taking their minds off the world for three minutes and thirty seconds (or more, once you put it on repeat). The summertime single will get your foot tapping, and you’ll be singing the hook for days. It is available now on iTunes and for radio play worldwide.
