‘Walking in the Air – An Evening of Music Composed by Howard Blake’
Tuesday 25 November, 7.30pm
Blake The Snowman Fantasia arranged for string orchestra
Blake Flute Concerto Op.493a
Blake Clarinet Concerto Op.329
Blake Serenade for Wind Octet Op.419
This glorious concert sees a much anticipated reuniting of the Academy and the music of Howard Blake. This follows the release of ‘The Barber of Neville’ on Pentatone Classics last year. The album features the melodic and expressive Flute and Clarinet Concertos performed this evening by the Academy’s own Principal Flautist Michael Cox and Principal Clarinettist James Burke. No tribute to Howard Blake, especially one at winter time, would be complete without a performance of the beloved score to The Snowman. This concert sees the very first performance of the score in a new arrangement for String Orchestra, commissioned from Howard Blake by Sir Neville Marriner who conducts this evening’s concert.

‘Chamber Classics Unwrapped’
Saturday 13 December, 7.30pm
Dvořák String Sextet in A major Op. 48
Schubert String Quintet in C major D.956
In their second appearance in this series, the Chamber Ensemble performs a pair of classics from the chamber music repertoire. The concert opens with Dvořák’s vigorous yet melodious String Sextet which the Chamber Ensemble has performed across the world. The Sextet is followed by Schubert’s String Quintet, which unconventionally includes an additional cello rather than viola, creating a depth of tone in the lower register. Considered to be Schubert’s greatest chamber work, it is no surprise to see it voted No.1 Chamber Classic by readers of BBC Music Magazine and Kings Place audiences.
Booking now from the Kings Place Box Office on 020 7520 1490 or online from their website.
We hope to see you at a concert soon!
