Detectives have now charged a 49-year-old man over the fatal stabbing of a 48-year-old man at Cessnock at the weekend.
Police were called to an address in Edgeworth Street shortly after 1am (Sunday 1 March, 2015) following reports of a stabbing.
On arrival police found a 49-year-old man with a number of stab wounds. He was unable to be revived at the scene.
While officers were conducting investigations into the stabbing, a 49-year-old man attended the scene.
He appeared to be suffering a number of wounds and was placed under arrest before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.
About 5.30pm yesterday (Monday 2 March, 2015) the man was released from hospital into the custody of police.
He was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with murder, common assault, intimidation, and breaching an apprehended violence order.
He was refused bail and will appear in Newcastle Local Court today (Tuesday 3 March, 2015).
