A police officer has been injured while attempting to arrest a teenager at Elermore Vale, in Newcastle today.
About 3pm (Tuesday 6 September 2016), police from Newcastle City Local Area Command were called to a home on Crambronne Parade following reports a teenager was allegedly intimidating the occupants and damaging the premises.
On arrival, an acting sergeant located the teen and spoke to him about the alleged damage.
Police will allege that while arresting the teen, he became violent and pushed the officer into a parked car and stuck him in the chest.
The officer deployed his OC spray at the teen, who then ran from the scene.
Further police were called to assist and the teen was located nearby by a police dog and arrested.
A 17-year-old teen was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics for a laceration to his arm which occurred during the arrest.
He was taken under police guard to John Hunter Hospital and later charged with malicious damage, intimidation, assault police, resist arrest and escape lawful custody.
The teen is expected to have a bedside bail hearing tomorrow (Wednesday 7 September 2016).
The acting sergeant sustained a fractured thumb and is not expected to return to full duties for several weeks.
